Mixed Race People, Good For America? YES!

I find it funny that interacial couples are even still taboo today.  I remember earlier this year Brudda J had a post talking about the Cheerios commercial that featured an interracial couple and their child.  People went nuts over it Black people and White people alike.  I sometimes wonder what its like to to be Asian, Hispanic or "other" and  watch the Black people and White people complain about shit everyday.  Anyway obviously race is still a very sensitive subject.  Black peoples ears perk up if they hear the word "black" (in any context) uttered from a southern accent.  Black people and White people still at times feel some type of way when they see couples of different races walking together.  Well, usually its Black women that shoot that dirty look to a Black man and a White woman together.  A Black man will give the proverbial "head nod of approval" when their girl aint looking.  Funny how it works right?  Sometimes I feel like at the end of the day we just want something to complain about but this post is not about interracial dating.  We have covered that a couple times before. This post touches on what the more disapproving of interracial dating fear the most.  Mixed race children.

My mother being the product of an interracial relation gives me special but not full insight into this issue.  But I do remember the first major conflict I had when this subject was brought up.  I was talking to this girl and we had been friends for a long time but were kind of thinking about being mroe than that and she brought up interracial dating and how she thought it was wrong and an afront to the Black race.  I took major offense and told her that in some way I am a product of and interracial relationship and she said that I "didn't count" and continued to spew her ignorance.  Needless to say, that relationship didnt go anywhere.  I could write and incredible blog post about how that ended but I wouldn't want to embarass her.  Anyway, this isnt the first time I have heard this. I have friends who believe that it is their responsibility to their race to marry a black woman/man for the preservation of the Black American family.  What a crock of shit!  That is so ass backwards to me its laughable.  The funny thing is that interracial marriages and mixed race children represent a personification of the American Melting pot and the existence of more interracial people in our country will inevitably open up a brand new dialogue about race which can only bring about positive change.  This is really ironic because most of the people who claim interracial relationships mark the dissolution of Black culture also preach equality and social justice.  Are not interracial relationships one of the most symbolic public celebrations of that mentality?

Now this is not a ode to white women. Honestly I would prefer to date people of other cultures regardless of their skin color just because they carry with them new perspective and experiences which I find interesting.  I am not asking people to see my way of thinking but if you site personal responsibility to your race as a factor in choosing a mate you might think a bit too highly of yourself in general.  Just a thought.

Oh and mixed race women are hot as shit.  Thats a fact.  Why you think we Americans have this fantasy about Brazil? They're ALL mixed up over there and if we keep going the way were going in about 50 years our women can look like this----->

I'll leave you with that.

Why Black People Hate Macklemore

I first heard Macklemore while listening to NPR tiny desk concert back in February of this year. He played 3 tracks, Same Love, Thrift Shop, and Hands Up or whatever that track is called. Anyway I heard this guy and thought cool, this kinda bohemian white rapper with this trumpet player that looks like they found him playing on a beach in Jamaica selling coconut water for a dollar to tourists. Oh and they got this fat nigga singing the hook who looks like a cast member from Sister Act 2. I had no idea this dude was about to take over my radio and television for the subsequent half year. This man is a phenom.  He's an underground/internet sensation who is making guap off 3 tracks with no major label. I give him a lot of credit and personally find him to be a decent artist. Not my cup of tea but I get why he's popular. With that said let me continue...

This post is dedicated to the most entertaining combination of social media and pop culture that exists: Black Twitter + Any award show. This is the time when all the blackest funniest rachetest amateur twitter comedians come out to entertain the masses. It also happens to be one of my favorite hobbies. While watching the VMAs I noticed that Macklemore caught some serious (and hilarious) hate from followers. ie one of my followers tweeted "Macklemore is the white guy you date when you realize that you only date black guys" I was trying to figure out why Black People hate Macklemore so much and I think I figured it out.

Lets start this by saying black people are THE HARDEST race to please.  You ever seen Showtime at the Apollo? You better entertain us quick or we will sandman your ass off stage so fast you will wish you never saw a stage in your life. We are HARSH. Not only do we want our cake, we want to eat it obviously BUT it better be our favorite cake with a cold glass of milk.  Oh and dont let us find out that another race got a better cake cuz we'll want that one too.  With that said we are very protective over our music.  We have no problem with other races participating in music we create but you better damn sure make it some music that we like.  A couple years back I wrote a post called 10 White People that Black People Love.  Some notable musicians on the list included Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Eminem, Michael McDonald (lol) I explained why black people love them and the points ring so true to this post that I felt compelled to bring them to the attention of the readers.

So here is a list of the reasons I came up with.

Why Black People Hate Macklemore.

1. He's white (and rich)

this is sad but true. If your a rapper and white and rich, you've already got some ground to cover before your getting the black vote.

2.  He has no Black cosigners.

If you notice all the white musicians we love have respected Black friends JT got Jay Z.  Eminem has Dre , Robin Thicke has the envy of every Man on his arm in Paula Patton. We respect that and that brings me to the next point.

3. Macklemore dates a white woman.

Now you might be thinking, well he IS White, BUT I guarantee if he showed up to the VMAs with a black woman or at least acknowledged he like Black Chicks he would get more love.

4.  He's got corny music.

Now this should be at the top of the list since we are discussing music but unfortunately its clear that we Black peopel don't give a shit whether your music sucks...if your Black (2 chains, lil Wayne, Trinidad, etc...)

5. His only black friends look like some really humble fat nigga
formally of  the Harlem Boys Choir all grown up (Ray Dalton) and that nigga with dreads that hangs out in front the coffee shop reciting original poetry at 12 noon who you're still not sure is homeless or not.  (his trumpet player)

Long story short.  We dont understand Macklemore.  He's "weird" black people dont do weird, and we really dont like different (so sad). We dont know how to pronounce his name and we hope he'll be forgotten before we actually figure out how to say it right.  I'm sorry Macklemore.  We're not jumping on your bandwagon anytime soon.

Where the Brown People At? Game of Thrones Addition Spoilers

-->

With the Fifth book out  and the end of the third season on HBO, Game of Thrones (or A Song of Ice and Fire for true nerds out there) has pretty much solidified itself in American culture. With that said, I know all you Blerds (black and brown nerds) are wondering, “Where all the Black/Brown people at?” Well their there, you just have to look for them. Westeros is essentially Britain with parts of southern Spain thrown into the mix (you have to wait till they get to the Martell’s which is kind of a desert people.)But the rest of the world is surprising brown when you think about it. So here's a compressive look at the Brown people of Game of Thrones

Where they at?

http://www.sermountaingoat.co.uk/map/versions/speculative_map.jpg

To find brown people in A Song of Ice and Fire, you have to move away from Westeros and go south. Really far south. There’s an Island were all African described folks seem to come from called the Summer Isles (think the Caribbean.) To the east you kind of have Asian people in an area called the Jade Sea. Then The Dorthraki are in the East as well and they’re brownish though hard to put a finger on what. Lastly Slaver Bay seems to be made up of Middle Eastern, which is problematic for a number of reasons.

The Show
These are characters that are played by Brown actors, actors who consider themselves brown, or non-WASP looking people along with the breathing status of said character.

Grey Worm- Balless but Alive.
http://thebiglead.fantasysportsven.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/grey-worm.jpg

An Unsullied who was purchased by Daenerys, who later becomes the voice of the Unsullied and her major advisor. Grey Worm’s races was never specified in the books, but in the show he’s played Jacob Anderson, a light skin British brother whose got a wicked spear game (pause). He speaks in monosyllabic sentences and tends to brood a lot. But if you had someone chop off your nuts you wouldn’t look so pleased either.

Salladhor Saan-  Alive but looking for better Lighting.
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120320163961/gameofthrones/images/a/a5/Salladhor.png

Prince of the Narrow Sea, Saan is a pirate-lord and mercenary. Because of his friendship to Davos Seaworth, he fought with Stanis Bratheron in the Battle of Black Water. After losing he left, to go do pirate things. Technically being from Lys (one of the islands of Braavos, which...man read the book) Salladhor is not black, but the Zimbabwean actor Lucian Msamati plays him. Msamati is a pretty interesting guy having founded a theater group and is a playwright and director. See, the more you know.

Missandei-  Bathing the Khalessi, and explaining obvious plot points

http://i.imgur.com/TAAINe3.jpg

We at 5ivebruhs have dubbed her sexy translator chick, which is kind of unfair. Missandei is a Naathi (one of the Summer Isles) slave who is freed by Daenerys and becomes her translator in Slavers Bay.  In the book she becomes one of Daenerys’ many lovers, though the show only hints at it. Missandei is played by the oh so attractive Nathalie Emmanuel, a British soap star. The shows have kind of regulated her to filling in the gaps that would usually given to us by George R. R. Martin’s prose. Here’s hoping she gets a little more interesting.

Xaro Xhoan Daxos-  Locked in a Safe
http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/30500000/got-game-of-thrones-30586766-500-243.gif

Powerful merchant prince of Qarth, and overall douche bag, he’s the first black guy to try to play the game only to get royally fucked up.  By being a dick he got his men killed, and he locked in a vault for all time. Shakespearean actor, Nonso Anozie, whose master of the English Language didn’t exactly help him when he got his ass beat, played him.

Talisa Maegyr-  Knife in the Belly
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/p480x480/165444_147111382137696_1078861477_n.png

Healer from Volantis, (one of the islands of Braavos) and the reason Robb lost his head.  Talisa is played by Spanish actress Oona Chaplin, who is the grand daughter of Charlie Chaplin and the great grand daughter of Eugene O’Neil (every theater nerd reading this blog just had a nerdgasm…so one.). Even though Braavos are Olive tone people, Oona considers herself “non-white” which puts her on our team. Take that college application race checklist.

Khal Drogo-  Suffocated
http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/6/62144/1887656-khal_drogo.jpg

I’m starting to notice a pattern. Deanery’s’ crew is starting to look like the rainbow coalition. Khal Drogo was the chieftain of the Dothraki tribe that Deanery’s’ gets sold to. At first he’s kind of a dick, but later grows to love her (granted she’s like 14 in the book and he’s 30 but I mean age ain't nothing but a number.) He dies by some witch whose village he burns down and because Deanery’s is a big old softy at that point. Native Hawaiian/American Indian actor Jason Momoa played Khal Drogo.

Rakharo: Headless in a Desert, Kovarro: I mean who even remembers this guy, Aggo: Some Extra who got lucky
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i195/lundymicron/Game%20of%20Thrones/Targaryens/RakharoEp3.jpg
http://oyster.ignimgs.com/mediawiki/apis.ign.com/game-of-thrones/d/d0/Kovarro.jpg
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120402065824/gameofthrones/images/5/52/Aggo.jpg

The Bloodriders of the Khalessi. Rakharro is played by Asian/British actor Elyes Gabel, Kovarro is played Steven Cole who is very clearly a brother, and Aggo was some random extra but because he’s Dothraki I’ll lump him in.

Shae:  Washing Sansa’s bed sheets
http://awoiaf.westeros.org/images/thumb/3/3d/Shae_HBO.jpg/300px-Shae_HBO.jpg

Tyrion’s girlfriend, or that woman with that weird accent if your American, Shae is a prostitute that is one of the few people who actually likes Tyrion Lanister besides his fans. She’s played by Sibel Kekilli, whose a Turkish German Muslim former pornstar turned award-winning political actress who fights for rights of Islamic women (brain just exploded).

Random Slavers/Unsullied/Mercenaries: Running around looking scared, glowering as their slaves are taken away, or standing at painful attention hoping not to fuck the shot up.

As Daenerys goofs off around slaver bay she runs into an assortment of Brown faces that she either chops off their heads, burns, or frees from the bonds of slavery (there is no middle ground for this woman.) Luckily or unluckily these Brown or Olive people have been cast as tan looking extras. Also based on the one shot of the entire Unsullied army, it looked like the Patriots football line up, so we can assume there's brown people fighting off camera whenever some person runs into frame and regales us with a stunning battle monologue that we will never see due to budget restrictions.

The Books: These characters were not included in the show. Which isn't a shame because they are pretty terrible written.

Jalabhar Xho
http://awoiaf.westeros.org/images/thumb/e/ec/Jalabhar_Xho.jpg/250px-Jalabhar_Xho.jpg

An Exiled prince from the Summer Islands, he kind of hangs around Kings Landing hoping for an army to one-day take back his lands. He usually just attends Tourney’s and flirts with Margery.

Alayaya and Chataya

Before I wrote this I didn't realize at least one of them gets a cameo. This is a shot of a random extra whom we assume is Alayaya or her mother Chataya. Because the show doesn't specify, I'm going to keep them here.  Hoes that work for Tyrion and Varys. Alayaya is tortured because she ends up taking the fall for Shae. Her part has been replaced by a white character who Joffery shoots full of arrows in the show.

Balaq
http://awoiaf.westeros.org/images/thumb/c/c8/Balaq_TheMico.jpg/250px-Balaq_TheMico.jpg

A sellsword. Has white hair and rocks a shit ton of gold rings like a Run-DMC reject.

Bill Bone
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/agotlcg/news/beyond-the-narrow-sea/a-roll-of-the-dice/old-bill-bone.png

Old ass sellsword.

Moqorro
http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121128202908/cronacheghiacciofuoco/it/images/1/1e/Moqorro-vd.jpg

A red priest (like that chick who gives birth to shadow monsters.) He’s currently looking for Daenerys but its unclear for what. He’s a wild card at this point in the book and is quickly becoming a major plot point. So we may have another Black actor join the ranks in another three years. Describe as 6'2 with Black skin, with red tattoos across his face. So Idris Elba? Like all red priest he knows more then he’s telling the readers, but seems to have his own agenda. There isn't a google group for followers of R'holl, because none of them have any idea what the other is doing.

Game of Thrones Black Count (Spoliers): 0

Last night's episode was crazy. But no additions. So though I was like, they included Thoron of Mir, oh shit Joffery is a bitch, oh that make out session was hot!, I still have to include sad Tyrion for no black folks last night.

Millenial Imagination

In the last semester of my college experience , I took a course that impacted me in more way than I thought it would. The course was designed to reshape and challenge your thinking and encourage you to stretch your imagination in order to bring about social change. The course was called "Millennial Imagination", very fascinating stuff, but without getting into that much detail about the course I will say that there was a passage in one of the books that stood out to me particularly. It was called "Reclaiming the Language"". The concept basically was to take a term that is used and has a perceived purpose or definition and then assessing it and breaking down its meaning
Well I thought of a term that, when I used the "reclaiming the language" technique on it, really didn't sit well with me. This term in "African American". I can't stand this term. I think its a cop out and an inaccurate means to describe all Black people in America.

Point 1

Primarily my issue with this term is the use of the word African. No dis to my African peoples but I'm really not African, wasn't born there and really don't identify with that culture whatsoever. So why would I use this term to describe me? A lot of people would be upset to read this but please "hear me out" (as Dead Mike would say). Why do I have to identify with an entire continent that consists of 53 countries? You hear any white people claiming the whole of Europe? Nope! Do we accept this terminology in order to pay homage to an unfortunate displacement brought about by ignorance hatred and laziness (slavery I mean)? If so, I'd rather not. Honestly I believe that because of the youth of our nation we all as Americans cling so desperately to our "roots" because we feel like it gives us a sense of cultural identity hence, the reference to African American. Africa is made up of countries who all maintain and continue there own individual cultures and for us to claim the ENTIRE continent I feel is frankly a little ignorant.

Point 2

We (American Black people) aren't the only Black people in the world who were enslaved and now reside in another part of the world far away from Africa. Most countries in South America and "the islands' all contain black people with African ancestry who have adopted the culture of whatever country they live in without claiming Africa the way we do. To be quite honest they may be less far removed genetically from their African ancestors. They identify themselves with the country they live and I believe this is a step that needs to be taken in our country. Talk about "Millennial Imagination"! How crazy would it be if we identified ourselves only as Americans (of course this is most likely not an option but just imagine for a second)....I just think that it gets kind of ridiculous when Black people get into explaining there ancestry. I asked this chick her ethnicity and she replied "I'm PuertoRican, Brazilian, and Black." WTF does that mean?!?! That could be a combination of ANY race...

I like to keep it simple and just say I'm Black because to me, Black American is a culture in itself that I am proud to be apart of and If I HAVE to categorize myself by color (which it seems I do) ill keep it Black. I'm not saying that if you can trace back your ancestry that you shouldn't claim it. I just believe that when we stop clinging to the past maybe we can move forward as a collective and truly become that "melting pot" they taught us about in Social Studies. We as Black Americans have worked so hard to become equal here and have made contributions that were and are paramount in our countries success. I say we should claim it. But that just Jonny Casanovas opinion...

Honestly Id love to hear your thoughts on this (i usually wouldn't do this but...) hit the comment box if you feel so compelled. I really want to know others opinions.

Thinking Globally on Race

So I was listening to the new Wale album for the first time and I was vibing to it and although I was already a fan, I was extremely impressed with it. I was about half way through the album when I got to the track entitled "Shades". This track impressed me the most from the beat to the lyrics to the content it was all around my favorite track. It took a very personal and introspective look at his (Wale's) views on skin tone and how prejudices exist even within the black community from his perspective being of "direct" African decent and having immigrant parents.

This song flashed me back to when my whole perspective changed on race.

It was January 2009 and I was studying abroad in London, England. As a black man I felt more exposed and vulnerable than I have ever in my entire life. Here's why. In America having been taught black history and living and observing how people look at black people in America had me completely nervous on how people would perceive me here in London. I brought a bag full of prejudices with me on the plane which meant nothing there. Being the only black person on the trip didn't help at all. I had no person to bounce my frustrations off of... But I'm glad I was able to get through it on my own because I learned so much from the experience.

The course was about studying the immigrant communities in London from the mouths of the people themselves.... so they dropped the privileged students in the middle of the East End of London...where the colored people were. This I wasn't so comfortable with as a minority (as if we were scientists collecting information on coloreds) but I figured id take some time to learn something about myself in the process and this made things easier. After a couple of days I found a youth center that I ended up volunteering at everyday till my trip was over. It was here that I learned the biggest difference in how race is looked at in London. First off white people are allowed to talk about race without being attacked which was refreshing to me. Secondly was most of the "colored" people that are there know where they came from. Meaning they have a clear understanding of their nationality and claim THAT even before the country where they live. This hit me like a ton of bricks when I was caught speechless by a bunch of Arab Somali and Indian kids in a "theater" class at the center. One of the kids asked me "what" I was. I was like "Oh I'm American". The girl looked at me sideways like "duh.." she replied "Yeah I got that from your accent but where are your from? Are you Somali? You look Somalian..." I was confused. I didn't have an answer. I was almost embarrassed. I took this opportunity to give a little American history lesson on slavery and how it made it difficult for black people to trace back their lineage. They were floored. They actually didn't believe the story I told. It was amazing to me how much I was able to share about something that is common place in America. Very long story short, I came back to the states with a whole new attitude and perspective on life and more specifically, race. I have a new found respect for the perspective that immigrants in our country can bring to us if we have the patience and the good mind to listen. I got a small taste of how it is for them.

I encourage everybody to do some travelling across the pond. Not to mention the bars are fucking great and the women are BEAUTIFUL... 5ivebruhs members....we need to make a trip to London when we can...oh and we can bring along the fallen Dead Mike as well.

Shouts to my best friend when we were 8....Ricky...found out he was living in London the same time I was there and got a beer with him...good times.

Top 10 White People That Black People Love

Black people are great. We can take our situation and make it look attractive to those who can't live it. Even if it sucks. We do this in various ways but one way we do this is we adopt white people that we like into our club and say things like "he not white he lightskinned" or "hes/shes white but he/she must have some black in him/her down the line." White people love hearing this. They feel like they get the cool points from having black people like them but they still wake up in the morning a white person with the infinite perks and benefits associated. In order to get into this "club" all you need is to gain black peoples trust in some kind of way... Doesnt hurt if you adopt a black child...activities like that gain our trust. You see, we don't assume all white people are or aren't racist (sad but true) we need confirmation sometimes and if were gonna claim you there needs to be some above and beyond type shit going on with your involvement in our community our music etc. With that said heres a list of the "Top 10 White People that Black People Love"

10 Adam Levine
We like this guy...He showed up on Kanyes "Late Registration" and on Alicia Keys "Unplugged" album. We trust him. Not to mention if you check most black peoples iPods and you'll find some Maroon 5 on that joint.

9 Robin Thicke
Hes got a lot of soul for a white boy. Black girls love him. Black men are jealous of him cuz that he pulled Paula Pattons fine ass. Either way we like him. He makes good music and we trust this guy.

8 Eminem
He was the first legitimate white rapper to hit the scene. We like him. He has personality and is respected in the rap game. Almost didn't make the cut simply because white people love him as much if not more than Black people do. Plus I ve never heard him say "Nigger" in a rhyme and I respect that (he coulda tried to test the waters)

7Joe Biden
Hes the VP under Barack Obama....Of course we trust his ass. Plus he murdered Sarah Palin in that debate. You know black people like you when after a Vice Presidential debate you could hear this in any black barbershop: "Daaammn!! Biden gave that bitch the business!!!!"

6Ellen Degeneres
We trust Ellen...Shes just mad neutral. We believe in her generosity and genuinely enjoy her show. I mean damn she got Halle Berry to do the "Halle Berry Dance" on her show. Black people just have no reason not to like her.

5 Brad and Angelina
Im lumping these 2 together....Before I get deep, let me go shallow(thats what he said). Angelina is a bad chick and I know black chicks who dont like white guys but love Brad Pitt. Not only are they one of the most powerful couples in Hollywood, they got a crib in New Orleans so they could continue to lead the effort to rebuild the city in the wake of Katrina. We like that. Not to mention they have more black kids than most black families. Membership accepted.

4Robert Deniro
This guy's name has turned up in rap lyrics and references to his movies and his characters have resonated in the hip hop community for years. 3 words...Godfather Goodfellas Casino. Oh....and he's also married to a black woman (google Grace Hightower if your scratching your head right now)

3Justin Timberlake
"Future Sex Love Songs"=Classic . Any white guy who can drop a classic R and B album deserves immediate membership.

2Michael McDonald
If your confused, I understand. You may not even have know this man was white until you saw his infomercial selling his versions of classic R n B tunes. This white dude has more pure and genuine soul than most Black people ever have or will have. He gets a high bid.

1Bill Clinton
You knew it was coming. Our favorite (Pre-Obama) President since JFK. He has an uncanny charisma and ability to be in tuned with "our issues". Black "Bible Belt" grandmothers still supported him even after the "skeet scandal". Thats saying something.

What would a Top Ten list be without honorable mentions
I got one for ya

John Mayer...we like John Mayer. He showed up on Kanyes unreleased track "Bittersweet" and (lesser known fact coming up) he was on Commons "Go" the guy actually singing "Gooo" on the hook was him. He made a cameo on Chappelles show which gave him some credibility. He also had a one episode TV show on VH1 which i thought was actually really funny where Trick Daddy was his only guest. Great effort dude but not Top Ten material... Heres a video that explains how he gets an honorable mention.
